Palccoyo or Pallay Punchu: quieter alternatives to Rainbow Mountain
Updated October 24, 2026 · 5 min read
Palccoyo and Pallay Punchu are often described as quiet versions of Vinicunca, but they are not interchangeable. Both are very high day trips from Cusco, both depend on weather, and neither is an escape from altitude. The useful comparison is walking effort, road time and the landscape you want to see.
Palccoyo: several coloured ridges
Palccoyo offers multiple striped mountains and a stone forest on a route generally sold as gentler than the classic Rainbow Mountain hike. The highest-reviewed listed option is the Gentler Day Trek to Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain. “Gentler” is relative: the trail is still around 5,000 metres, exposed to wind and capable of feeling difficult after little acclimatisation.
Choose Palccoyo if you prefer a shorter walk and a broader highland landscape rather than one famous summit photograph. Confirm the actual walking time, entrance fee, meals and whether Checacupe’s Inca bridge is included.
Pallay Punchu: sharper folds, longer commitment
Pallay Punchu is known for steep, folded bands that resemble a woven Andean poncho. It receives fewer visitors, partly because the drive from Cusco is long and the path can be steeper. Quiet does not mean easy or close. The listed full-day excursion includes meals, but inclusions and current trail conditions must be checked on its booking page.
Choose Pallay Punchu when its distinctive ridge is the reason for going and you accept more road time. Choose Palccoyo for a less concentrated landscape and usually less demanding walk.
For either, avoid the first day in Cusco, take warm and waterproof layers and ask how the operator responds to snow, storms or road closures. No tour can promise clear colours. If anyone develops serious altitude symptoms, descending matters more than reaching the viewpoint; obtain personal medical advice from a clinician before travel.
