Moray, Maras and Chinchero: half-day tour or ATV?

Updated October 24, 2026 · 5 min read

Circular Inca terraces at Moray set among dry Andean hills

Moray, the Maras salt pans and Chinchero are often bundled because they lie northwest of Cusco, but they are three different experiences. Moray is known for circular Inca terraces, Maras for thousands of salt pools on a steep slope, and Chinchero for archaeology, a highland town and weaving demonstrations. A Sacred Valley tour connects the history; an ATV tour makes the journey itself part of the activity.

Choose a road tour for context

The cultural half-day format is better if your priority is a guide’s explanation and time to look around. The highly reviewed Moray, Maras Salt Mines and Chinchero Weaving Tour covers all three themes in roughly a half day, although exact stops and admissions must be checked on the booking page. A weaving demonstration may include a shop visit; you are not obliged to buy.

The weakness is pace. Pickup rounds and several stops compress the time at each place, and some tours view the salt pans from a designated area rather than walking among working pools. Ask what “Maras” means in the itinerary: the town, the salt pans or both.

Choose an ATV for riding

An ATV trip suits travellers who genuinely want to ride on rough highland tracks. It is not a faster version of the same guided visit. Safety briefing, practice and the riding route consume time, while access rules may require the final approach to a site by other transport or on foot. Confirm whether you ride alone or share, where the ATV section begins, which admissions are extra and what happens in poor weather.

Dust, mud and traffic between activity zones are part of the experience. Bring layers and closed shoes. If archaeological explanation matters more than the vehicle, the road tour is the stronger choice; if riding is the main attraction, accept that the cultural visits will usually be lighter.

Neither format needs a rental car from Cusco. For an independent route, verify current access and parking locally before departure rather than assuming every archaeological entrance is reached from the same road.
