Machu Picchu from Cusco: train, day trip or Inca Trail – and how do you get tickets?

The difficult part of visiting Machu Picchu is not choosing whether it is worth seeing. It is fitting together an entrance ticket, transport to Aguas Calientes and enough time to reach your booked entry slot. From Cusco, three plans make sense: arrange the train and entrance yourself, book a complete day trip, or enter on an Inca Trail itinerary.

The short answer

A complete Machu Picchu day trip is the simplest option if you have one day and do not want to coordinate transfers, train times, bus tickets and a guide. Independent travel gives you more control and makes an overnight stay in Aguas Calientes easier. The Inca Trail is a trek with permits and fixed logistics, not merely a scenic alternative to the train.

The official site currently divides the citadel into three circuits and ten routes. Circuit 1 emphasises panoramic viewpoints, Circuit 2 is the classic archaeological route, and Circuit 3 covers the lower royal sector and mountain variants. A ticket for one route does not mean free movement around the whole site. Choose the route before paying, based on whether your priority is the postcard viewpoint, the ruins themselves or an additional mountain hike.

Buying the entrance ticket

Use the Peruvian Ministry of Culture platform TuBoleto for a self-organised visit. You select the circuit, route, date and entry time and register with your passport or identity document. The Ministry opened advance sales for 2026 in November 2025, so popular dates and routes can sell out well before travel. Do not buy a train first and assume a suitable entrance slot will remain.

For 2026 the official daily capacity is 4,500 in the regular season and 5,600 on specified peak dates. Those totals are spread across routes and time slots; they are not 5,600 interchangeable tickets. Check the live availability and current price on the official platform rather than relying on an old screenshot or blog.

Train or organised day trip?

The train-based independent route normally requires ground transport from Cusco towards a Sacred Valley station, the train to Aguas Calientes, the shuttle bus or a steep walk to the entrance, and the same chain in reverse. It works best with a night in Aguas Calientes because delays are less likely to collide with a fixed entry time.

A day tour packages those connections. The trade-off is a very long, tightly timed day and less freedom to linger. Confirm which circuit is included, whether the entrance ticket is already secured, the departure station, guide language and the final return point in Cusco before paying. “Machu Picchu tour” can describe very different bundles.

What changes with the Inca Trail?

The classic Inca Trail enters through Intipunku and can only be used with an authorised agency, an official guide and an advance reservation. The daily quota includes support staff, so places are scarcer than the headline number suggests. The route closes every February for conservation; the official 2026 closure ran from 1 to 28 February, with reopening scheduled for 1 March.

Choose the trail because you want the multi-day walk, camps and archaeological sites along the route. Choose the train if Machu Picchu itself is the goal. Before booking either, match the name on every ticket to the travel document you will carry and read the cancellation terms for the train, entrance and tour separately.
